The type of abortion you might have is based heavily on how far along you are in your pregnancy. Most abortions are done in the first trimester. However, second and third trimester abortions are not uncommon. Each link below will take you to information (what happens during the procedure, the cost, certain things to consider, side effects, etc.) describing the procedure in total.

If you have not already done so, please go through the "Your Choice" workbook to discover how you feel about being pregnant and the possibility of having an abortion. If you have already gone through the workbook and have decided that abortion is your choice, reading about the various procedures available to you is one of several steps you need to take.

First Trimester Abortions

RU-486 - This is also called the Abortion Pill, M&M, a medical (or non-surgical) abortion, and by its medical name Mifeprex (mifepristone) & misoprostol. It is an abortion that can be done up to 7 weeks (49 days) from the first day of your last period.

Methotrexate & Misoprostol - A methotrexate & misoprostol abortion is also referred to as an M&M or medical (non-surgical) abortion. It is an abortion that can be done up to 7 weeks (49 days) from the first day of your last period.

Manual Aspiration - A manual vacuum aspiration (MVA) abortion is a surgical procedure, and may also be called a menstrual extraction. This abortion can be done between 3 and 8 weeks from the date of the first day of your period. This abortion procedure is uncommon since newer techniques have been developed since its use began in the early 1900s.

Vacuum Aspiration - A vacuum aspiration abortion is a surgical procedure, and may also be called a suction aspiration, suction abortion, vacuum curettage, vacuum abortion, suction curettage, uterine aspiration, suction D&C, and is what is commonly referred to when speaking of a first trimester surgical abortion. This abortion can be done between 6 and 12 weeks from the first day of your last period.

D&C (Dilation & Curettage) - A dilation and curettage abortion is a surgical procedure and is known more commonly as a D&C. This abortion can be done between 6 and 12 weeks from the first day of your last period.

Herbal - Herbal abortions have been around for centuries. If you are looking for ways to end your pregnancy in the privacy of your home, you will no doubt wonder about the possibility of using herbs. This page will speak of some of the more common methods of herbal abortion along with their risks. Herbal abortions do not work well. If you take them the correct way at the correct time in your cycle they only have a 20-30% chance of causing abortion.
